Now that the holidays have come and gone, the time has come to take down your Christmas tree, but, then what? Well, if you’re in the Prairie du Chien area, your Christmas clean-up solution comes on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Bright and early Saturday morning, at 8 a.m., some volunteers from the Prairie du Chien Jaycees and drivers from the city of Prairie du Chien will drive around town to help remove residents’ holiday burdens.

Jaycees president Tori Pettera said the event is collaboratively sponsored by the Jaycees and the city of Prairie du Chien. “The city provides the trucks and the drivers and we provide the volunteers.”

The Jaycees ask that all trees be bag-less and that all decorations be removed prior to pick-up.

If you would like to have your Christmas tree removed for free, all you need to do is take it out to the closest corner of your block on Friday night, Jan. 9, said Pettera.

After all the trees have been picked up, Pettera added, the city disposes of the trees.

Many of the community’s trees were purchased from the Prairie du Chien Fire Department’s annual Christmas tree sale. Fire Chief Harry Remz said, this year, the sales went over very well. “We had about five trees leftover.”

The surrounding area purchased about 350 trees from the fire department’s traditional fundraiser. Remz said the sale’s success is in part due to the department’s outstanding supplier. “We haven’t had one complaint since we started going to him. He seems to have nice trees; they might be a little more expensive, but they sure do last and last.”

According to the most current Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics, a total of 611,387 Christmas trees were harvested in Wisconsin in 2012.
