Eugene J. Ackerman, 82, of Daytona Beach and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, Jan. 12, at the Florida Hospital in Daytona Beach.

He was born Nov. 24, 1932 in Glen Haven, the son of John and Alvina (Krogman) Ackerman. He married Mary Lou Ingham on Jan. 3, 1953 in Madison. They were eternally devoted to one another, living their marriage vows every day of their lives; and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary just last week.

Some of Gene’s favorite activities included taking daily rides through St. Feriole Island (the 4th Ward) where his father once owned a local grocery store. He retired from Oscar Mayer Foods in Madison after 32 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed working as a parts delivery driver at “Bumper to Bumper” in Madison. He liked to hunt, fish, and boat. He had an elaborate collection of miniature die-cast farm tractors, which was close to his heart as he was raised on a farm, in Glen Haven. His idea of a fun afternoon included playing video poker and visiting friends at the Lady Luck Casino (Marquette). He enjoyed life so much; he would tell everyone to “Do It Now”!!

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of Daytona Beach; his children, Jan E. (Shari) Ackerman of Daytona Beach, Gene J. (Marie) Ackerman of Madison and Debra L. (Gary) Henry of Naperville, Ill.; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean J. Ackerman; parents; and three sisters, Marion (Virgil-Robert) Cardin-Balk, Wilma (Earl) Leamy and Doris (Norman) Oates.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Jan. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with entombment in The Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Madison. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
