Mary Ellen (Jones) Horstman, 86, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.  Mary Ellen was born July 6, 1928, in Lima, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Edith Mae (Homewood) Jones and stepfather William Jones. Her childhood years were spent in Wadena and Elkport. Mary Ellen was baptized at Wadena and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. She attended the Elkport School.

On July 10, 1946, Mary Ellen married Alvin G. Horstman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. From this union five children were born.

Mary Ellen was employed at Muter Co., and Charlie Cain Speaker Factory, both in Guttenberg, Delong Embroidery in Elkader and owned her own upholstery business for many years. Mary Ellen enjoyed collecting angels and lighthouses.

She enjoyed reading, oil painting, traveling, sewing, visiting with her family and friends, and playing cards. Because of her deep faith in God, Mary became an ordained Spiritualist Minister.

Mary Ellen will be sadly missed by her children, Harvey (Bonnie) Horstman of Charlotte, Linda (James) Dryer of Guttenberg, Una (Lester) Groth of Garber, and Deborah Papagni of Dyersville; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, David Jones of Hopkinton; and many other family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin G. Horstman; a son, Karl Horstman; one great-granddaughter, Makenzie Rose Groth; her parents; brothers, sisters, and other family members; and her stepfather.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Guttenberg Care Center or St. Jude’s Hospice.

Visitation was from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, Iowa. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2015, at Guttenberg City Cemetery. The Rev. Shane Anderson officiated.
