ATV-UTV club seeking

members, designated

routes in Crawford County

By Ted Pennekamp

The Crawford County Ridge Runners ATV-UTV Club is currently underway with a membership drive and with asking the towns and villages of the county for designated routes for an ATV-UTV trail.

“I think people will really enjoy it,” said Greg Russell of Eastman, one of the people helping to form the club and create the trail. Russell said that about 75 people attended the initial meeting for the trail back in March and there have been several meetings in the months since. “You could tell it was going to be big right away,” he said.

It is hoped that the trail will eventually consist of hundreds of miles on hard-surface roads which will connect all of the villages in the county. Russell said that the proposed trail will be on not very heavily traveled roads but would cross busier roads at some points. He said that a map of the proposed trail is being developed and will change over the years as the trail continues to grow and change.

Russell also noted that the club will need to hold fundraisers in the future in order to purchase signs indicating where the designated trail routes are. “We are going to do this the right way, with safety first,” he said. The signs and other costs for the trail could possibly go as high as $25,000, said Russell.

The Crawford County Ridge Runners will eventually like to partner with similar clubs in the region and in northern Wisconsin to have a voice with the state legislature and to draw ATV-UTV enthusiasts from other areas.

“This will provide an avenue to come to Crawford County,” said Russell, who noted that people from other parts Wisconsin have expressed an interest in coming to Crawford County to enjoy their ATV-UTV passtime. Russell said that an ATV-UTV trail would enhance the economy of the county, the villages and the townships. A few of the businesses that would benefit include hotels, motels, campgrounds, restaurants, pubs, convenience stores and gas stations.

Russell said that posters touting the Crawford County Ridge Runners and the trail will soon be placed in numerous businesses along with membership forms so that prospective club members can sign-up.

For more information, interested persons can call John Shimpach at (608) 391-1253. The next meeting will be held at J & J’s On Main, 312 Main St., Gays Mills at 7 p.m. on July 15. “We are interested to hear everybody’s ideas,” Russell said.
