A Cassville teen was accidentally shot and killed Monday evening while he was participating in target practice with his friends, according to a release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

Jared Winkers, 17, of Cassville, was found dead at his residence at 9:07 p.m. Monday. Deputies said Winkers was shot after a weapon held by a friend accidentally discharged.

According to the release, Winkers and “several of his friends” were shooting targets at Winkers’ residence. Deputies said they were using long guns and pistols.

Deputies were told that “there was an accidental discharge” from a weapon held by Dillon Vogt, 19, of Cassville. Winkers was fatally wounded as a result, according to the release.

No charges have been filed. Currently, “all indications are pointing toward a tragic accident,” according to the release.

The case is open and the investigation is ongoing, deputies wrote in the release. Investigators are awaiting autopsy results and further analysis of evidence.
