5K, street dance, tractor pull, Tri-City anniversary celebration highlight event

This year’s Luana Daze celebration, held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 30, promises another fun-filled weekend for the whole family.

Activities kick off Saturday morning with the Color Blast 5K Fun Run. Wear white and prepare to be color blasted as participants walk, run or roll on bicycles, rollerblades or strollers through the event. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the race at 9 a.m. The 5K will start and end in front of the Luana Tap.

From 9 to 11 a.m., enjoy a pancake and sausage breakfast served by the Luana Community Club in front of the Luana Tap.

Following the Color Blast, check out the Luana firemen’s waterball fights, with registration at 11 a.m. and the fights at noon. Registration for the beanbag tournament will begin at noon, with the tournament kicking off at 1 p.m. The Luana Fire Department will serve brats and chips throughout the day.

That evening, get ready to bust a move at the Luana Tap street dance, as the band Challenger performs at 9 p.m.

Also highlighting Saturday’s festivities is a 75th anniversary celebration for Tri-City Golf Course. Nestled in the hills outside Luana, the golf club began in 1940 when three carloads of men from Monona, Luana and Postville set out to find a location for a golf course located between Monona and Postville. Three sites were considered, with the men settling on an area east of the highway—on the Herman Pruess farm near Hardin—for its central location, good lay of the land and creek.

Tri-City is a 2,821-yard, nine-hole public golf course with a par of 34.

“The yardage isn’t long, but it’s challenging. It has hills and you cross water the first four holes,” said clubhouse manager Jackie Radloff Schneider, noting that Tri-City is one of the best-kept courses—and one of the best-kept secrets—in northeast Iowa.

Enjoy all the course has to offer Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a three-person, par 3, nine-hole tournament. Drink specials, including a Bloody Mary bar, will also be offered during that time. From 4 to 7 p.m., Old School Catering will furnish a catered grill out. Tickets can be purchased in advance or the day of the event. RZ Soundtracks will also provide music during the evening.

On Sunday, the fun continues, as dozens of tractors come rumbling into Luana for the tractor pull. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with the pull commencing at noon. The fire department will again sell food and refreshments throughout the day.
