Labor Day can collection for Youth Football League
By Bruce Thein
The Youth Football League will be conducting a can and bottle drive on Labor Day, Sept. 7. Youth League players are asking for the generous support of the community by setting out empty pop and beer cans on your doorstep for the players to pick up.
Parents and players will be driving around the communities of Guttenberg and Garnavillo between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on Labor Day to collect the bottles and cans. Trailers will also be set up for people to drop off cans in the parking lots of Guttenberg Industries and the old Double LL parking lot in Garnavillo.
It costs $1,200 per team per year to organize and operate the Youth Football League, and funds raised on Labor Day will help defray some of this expense. This year there will be two teams and the league needs to raise $2,400 to cover expenses.
In addition to uniforms, expenses include money for referees, insurance, helmets, pads and anything else it takes to operate the league.
Adam’s Ice has been the major sponsor the last few seasons, donating $500 each year to help defray the cost of operating the league. The Youth League tries to raise the remainder, and the can and bottle drive is the major fundraising event of the season.
Volunteers needed
Youth League games are usually played on Sunday afternoons, but the first games this year will be on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the Stephen D. Shannon Athletic Complex in Guttenberg.
High school football players help run the home games, and the league is always looking for certified referees and other volunteers to help coordinate and manage the home games. If interested in volunteering, contact James Feudner at Peoples State Bank or by email (jfeudner@peoplesfinancial.com).
