Stolen work trailer recovered, Highland man arrested

The Prairie du Chien Police Department has recovered a work trailer that was stolen from Prairie du Chien in late August.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the police department traveled to Stoughton to follow up on a lead of the previously stolen work trailer, which had about $20,000 worth of construction tools inside when it disappeared.

The two officers who traveled to Stoughton found the trailer parked at a Days Inn. They immediately contacted the Stoughton Police Department and requested their assistance in the investigation. After the Stoughton Police Department arrived, identification of the trailer was made through phone calls and pictures sent to the police department. Upon identification, the trailer was seized and towed to a secure location in Stoughton for further investigation.

On Friday, Oct. 9, officers returned to Stoughton and towed the trailer back to a secure location in Prairie du Chien for further investigation.

Scott E. McCalister, 43, of Highland, was arrested and placed in the Crawford County Jail in connection with the crime. A criminal complaint will be requested through the Crawford County District Attorney’s Office. McCalister will have his initial court appearance at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.

The black and gray United Expressline trailer, owned by Richard Sheckler Construction, was initially stolen from the area of the 400 block of South Main Street and the Highway 18 Bypass in Prairie du Chien sometime between 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 and 6:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24.
