This year, Halloween falls on Saturday, Oct. 31. In the city of Prairie du Chien, as with prior years, the sirens will sound around 5 p.m. to begin trick-or-treating hours. The sirens will sound again at 8 p.m., signifying the end of festivities for young goblins and their families.

Police Chief Chad Abram would like to remind trick-or-treaters and parents, as well as community members who plan to be out and about, of these tips, to assure a pleasant and safe night.

•Watch for children crossing the street.

•A parent or adult friend should accompany children.

•Wear light-colored, flame-retardant costumes decorated with reflective tape or stickers.

•Wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes to prevent falling.

•Wear face paint or makeup; a mask can restrict vision.

•Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility to drivers.

•Trick-or-treat at houses with porch lights on.

•Stay in familiar, well-lit neighborhoods.

•Pay attention to all traffic signs and signals.

•Look left, right and left again when crossing streets; always walk, don’t run. Make eye contact with drivers and watch for cars that are turning or backing up.

•Walk on sidewalks or paths; if there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

•Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Call the Prairie du Chien Police Department at 326-2421 with any questions or concerns.

More Halloween fun
Since costume-wearing is already a part of kids’ evening plans, why not put on the outfits, face paint/makeup, etc., a bit early and participate in the trick-or-treating and costume contest in downtown Prairie du Chien too? Sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Jaycees, participating downtown businesses and PdC Main Street, the costume contest will begin with registration at 12:30 p.m. and judging will follow from 1 to 2 p.m. on St. Feriole Island next to the haunted house. Ages 0-12 may participate; prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-places.

Afterward, continue the Halloween merriment by trick-or-treating up and down Blackhawk Avenue, as well as at Kozelka’s, A Cut Above and AmericInn. Treat bags will be available at True Value, courtesy of Sutton Insurance.

Before starting your trick-or-treat route at city residences, also take time to enjoy a lights on, kid-friendly haunt at the Halls of Terror, at the Cedar Building on the island, from 2 to 5 p.m.
