MFL MarMac freshman Hannah Schutte capped off a stellar cross country season with a 47th-place finish in Class 1A at the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31.

With a time of 21:26.7, Schutte placed in the middle of the pack. Alyssa Williams, a senior from Durant, placed first with a time of 19:12.9.

Head coach Eliza Philpott said she feels this is just the start for Schutte.

“I think that every person, at some point in their athletic career, wants to make it to state,” Philpott said. “For Hannah, this came true in her very first year ever in cross country.”

Philpott said she’s proud of the team’s accomplishments, as a whole, this season. After watching the meet in Fort Dodge over the weekend, the desire to return to state is strong.

“Hannah was intimidated at the beginning of the year about running the distances we do in practice and had even said on the first day, ‘I don’t think I can run that far!’ Well, now we know that wasn’t true. Not only can she run that far, she can do it well!” Philpott said. “Hannah has the competitiveness inside of her that every coach desires for their athletes. As coaches, we can only give them the tools to be successful. We can’t make them successful. They have to want it for themselves. We didn’t ever want to put the pressure on her or any of the team about placing at meets or qualifying for state, but we did always ask them to do their best every time and to have no regrets at the end of each race.”
