Semi hauling hogs crashes on Hwy. 133, some pigs killed
On Nov. 2 at 9:55 a.m., Richard Kipp, 52, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, was westbound on Highway 133 four-tenths of a mile east of County K in Woodman Township operating a 2004 Freightliner tractor trailer loaded with 150 hogs all weighing approximately 270 pounds.
While negotiating a sharp curve the tractor trailer struck the guardrail and the trailer detached from the tractor. The trailer went through the guardrail and overturned on a steep embankment above the Wisconsin River.
Several of the pigs were ejected from the trailer and some were trapped inside. The Sheriff’s Office contacted Fennimore Livestock to corral the loose pigs as well as free the trapped pigs. Several pigs died from the crash.
Bobs Towing of Prairie du Chien assisted in the recovery of the trailer. Highway 133 was shut down for several hours. The trailer was totaled and the tractor had extensive damage as did the guardrail.
Kipp was cited for driving too fast for conditions and was uninjured in the crash.
