Oscar W. Peterson, 68, of Woodman, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at his residence in Mt. Ida Township. 

Oscar was born on April 11, 1947 in Hickory Grove Township, Grant Co., the son of Otinius and Sadie Mae (Armfield) Peterson. He married Connie Wachter on Aug. 3, 1968 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Fennimore. 

Following graduation from Fennimore High School in 1965, Oscar attended Madison Area Technical College where he earned a degree as an electrical technician. He and Connie then moved to California where Oscar worked for the Lockheed Corp. for two years. Shortly after returning home to Wisconsin, Oscar was drafted into the US Army at the age of 23. He served in South Korea during the Vietnam Conflict maintaining Hawk surface to air missiles. Oscar and Connie farmed in Werley until selling the Dairy Cattle in 1998. He later purchased what became Oscar Peterson Insurance from Mark Freymiller in 2000. In addition to his insurance business, Oscar also worked for Bloomington Farmers Mutual at the time of his death. Oscar was a past 4-H leader and member of the Mt. Hope American Legion, Mt. Ida Town Board, First Congregational UCC church council and WAMIC insurance board of directors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and cheering on the Brewers, Packers and Badgers. Oscar was a loving and soft-spoken man who greatly adored his grandchildren and family. His caring and kind-hearted personality will forever be cherished.

Oscar is survived by his wife Connie of Woodman; three children, Corbet Peterson of Chippewa Falls, Carissa Miller of Wisconsin Dells, and Paula (Andrew) Novak of Waupun; grandchildren, Samuel and Christopher Peterson and Christa Novak; step-grandson Noah Olp; brothers Roy (LaVonne) Peterson of Sparta and Carl Peterson of Fennimore; sisters Betty Burkeland and Dagna Doan both of Fennimore; mother-in-law Bernadine Wachter of Woodman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marge Peterson of Topeka, Kans., Clara Peterson and Joyce Peterson both of Fennimore and Bill Meyer of Madison. 

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Raymond, Earl and Robert Peterson; sister Alice Meyer; father-in-law Herman Wachter; brothers-in-law Don Burkeland and Jerry Doan; and sister-in-law Shirley Peterson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday Jan. 23, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Fennimore. Pastor Bill Rettig with the First Congregational UCC Church in Boscobel will be officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday morning.
