Clayton County Development Group (CCDG) Executive Director Darla Kelchen spoke to the Monona Council at its Feb. 15 meeting, welcoming participation in a brownfields workshop CCDG has organized for area communities.

Brownfields include property, like abandoned buildings or old gas stations, that may still contain hazardous materials, pollutants or contaminants.

Last fall, said Kelchen, she and a group drove through communities and did GPS markings of potential sites that may contain lead paint or asbestos, or could even just use repairs. Communities received a list of properties, and Kelchen encouraged officials to prioritize the properties they would most like to tackle.

At the free brownfields workshop, which will be held Tuesday, March 29, a group from the Technical Assistance to Brownfields Program at Kansas State University will help attendees better understand what a brownfield is, what the brownfield redevelopment process is like and how funding and other resources can be obtained. Experts will also meet with attendees to discuss strategies to address individual brownfield challenges.

Every community in the county has some place they’d like to deal with, said Kelchen, “so, by working together, we can help everybody.”
