Dan Titlbach (pictured) and fellow city employee Nick Gilberts, laid carpet tiles last week in the new rec room in the downstairs of Hoffman Hall. They had some assistance from Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution inmates.

Currently, foosball (pictured), ping pong and nok hockey tables as well as a 50-inch TV have been donated to Hoffman Hall and will be used in the new rec room by the end of March. More gently-used donations of games and accessories would be appreciated. (Photos by Correne Martin)

What was once a former locker room at Campion Jesuit High School is now being reinvigorated for the purpose of a recreation room at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien. By the end of March, the renovated space will offer members as well as the public a new space for a variety of uses, such as parties, games and other casual entertainment.

Last week, city employees Dan Titlbach and Nick Gilberts, with assistance from Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution inmates, laid about a thousand carpet tiles—in warm earth tones—in the large, open space of Hoffman Hall’s downstairs.

“The thought was that we had this big space and we wanted it to be used,” Parks and Recreation Director Mike Ulrich pointed out. “We have to get it equipped yet, but it really lends itself to some more opportunities, which is just an additional membership benefit. Right now, when we have large events, kids are all over upstairs. This allows them another area downstairs where they can be monitored while having a fun time.”

Currently, the space has only a foosball table and ping pong table set up. A nok hockey table and a 50-inch TV have been donated for installation soon. Yet Ulrich is seeking additional donations of family-oriented games and accessories that might be gently used, such as a pool table, dart board, shuffle board, old-fashioned board games, gaming consoles, etc.

“We have had fundraisers—like our craft fairs—to make money for Hoffman Hall so we could get this room where it would be usable,” he said, noting that a large donation on behalf of the Jim and Alice Ulrich family was specifically earmarked for the rec room. “We still have about $2 million to go before the potential fitness center can be put in here, but in the meantime, we now have additional space we can rent for parties, meetings and special events, such as birthday parties, showers, anniversary parties and class reunions.”

These are short-term ideas for members and public citizens looking for a local room for rent. Renters can bring in their own food and even package the room use with that of the pool and gym areas for their needs.

In the long-term, Ulrich said the rec room may be another place where after-school and weekend programming takes place.
