Albena Mary Sutton, 103, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Thursday, March 31, at Four Winds Manor in Verona, surrounded by family.

She was born Dec. 30, 1912 in Wauzeka, the daughter of Mathias and Mary (Kracha), the seventh child of eleven children. She graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1931 and studied nursing at Prairie Sanitarium in Prairie du Chien until it closed in 1934. Albena married LaVern Sutton on Aug. 26, 1933 at St. Patrick’s Church, Seneca and together they farmed and raised five children until LaVern’s death on Oct. 6, 1956.

Albena thrived in the company of children. She and her husband were 4-H leaders for many years. As a widow she considered herself blessed to be able to make a living caring for children, first by assisting other families with child care and later by preparing hot lunch meals for grade school children. She prepared meals at Bridgeport School for a short time and then from 1962 until her retirement in 1990 she spent 28 happy years preparing homemade hot lunch meals for the children attending St. Johns School in Prairie du Chien. Many still recall the wonderful aroma of her fresh baked cinnamon rolls drifting into their classroom during morning instruction.

Albena retired in 1990 at the age of 78. She remained involved in church activities and enjoyed the next 22 years at home tenderly caring for her flower and vegetable gardens and hand-stitching hundreds of beautiful quilts, donating many to charity and nursing homes.

Albena was a loving, caring, and cheerful giver throughout her life and was dearly loved by many. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children, Bernard (Kathy) Sutton of Colorado Springs, Colo., Vern (Elly) Sutton of Mt. Horeb, Judy (Jim) Frett of Verona, Steve (Cindy) Sutton of Janesville; eighteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; ten brothers and sisters; a daughter, Marilyn Gilkes; a grandson, Scott Sutton; and two granddaughters, Trudy Gilkes and Laural Frett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiating with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery in Eastman. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
