When Guttenberg resident Dave Poggenklass lost his mother to Alzheimer’s Disease, he knew he wanted to help others in a similar situation. He connected with Joan Eulberg, of Garnavillo, whose mother also had the disease. Five years ago the two took a course through the Alzheimer’s Association and became the leaders of a support group in Guttenberg.

“We wanted to help other people who were struggling with the same types of things we went through with our parents. When we were going through it we really didn’t know who to reach out to or where to go for information. I was alone because I’m an only child, and she had siblings but they didn’t always know what was going on either,” said Poggenklass.

The Alzheimer’s support group meets monthly on the last Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Living Water Bible Fellowship in Guttenberg. Group members share informational packets, DVDs and CDs about different types of dementia, as well as information for caregivers. “All people are welcome to attend. Everything we talk about is confidential,” said Poggenklass. “We are a small group now, but we’d like to expand to help other people.”

Contact Poggenklass for resources or more information at 563-880-1592, or call Joan Eulberg at 563-880-4921.
