Barbara Jean Huebsch, 84, passed away Monday, June 6, at the Crossing Rivers Health Hospital after a brief illness.

Barbara was born May 13, 1932 in Oakes, N.D., the daughter of E.W. (Gene) Lee and Janice Lee. Barbara graduated from Oakes High School in 1950. She played the bugle and trumpet on the school drum and bugle corps. In summers she was a lifeguard and swimming teacher at the town swimming pool. She graduated from Hamline University with a degree in elementary education in 1954. After college, she taught school in Red Wing, Minn., San Bernadino, Calif., and Prairie du Chien. Her family moved from Oakes to Prairie du Chien in 1955, when her father was transferred to be the manager of Anthony’s Clothing Store. She enjoyed telling the story of how she met her husband, Fred, when she bought a car from him to drive to California. She was quite active in the community and served 12 years on the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Last year she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for serving 50 years on the Hospital Auxiliary Partners association as a volunteer. Part of that time she was president of that group. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Church and served on many committees. Barbara had many lifelong hobbies, most notable was her elaborate cross stitching. She also liked to knit, do crossword puzzles, and play solitaire. She enjoyed playing bridge and spent over fifty years in a bridge club. Other things she enjoyed were boating on the Mississippi in the family wooden cruisers, and later in their pontoon, and attending Wisconsin and Iowa football and basketball games. Until recently she often attended Green Bay Packer football games. Travel was one of her enjoyments, and she was able to travel to many foreign countries with her husband. If you mentioned the word “travel,” she was ready to go. She really enjoyed keeping busy and doing things.

Just a month ago she was delighted to attend the wedding in Milwaukee of her granddaughter, Karri. In recent years Barbara had Alzheimer’s. With the love and understanding of her family, and friends she was able to cope nicely with this. She would have celebrated her 58th wedding anniversary June 28, had she lived. She loved her family and loved family get-togethers.

Barbara is survived by her husband Fred Huebsch; three daughters Janet (Kevin) Kluesner, New Berlin, Jane Page, Marquette, Iowa, and Jennifer (Chris) McLimans, New Albin, Iowa. Other survivors include sister Diana Temte, Prairie du Chien; brothers Don (Jane) Lee, Bellville, Ill., and, Jim Lee, Pheonix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Dr. Karri (Kluesner) Adamson, Cole Kluesner, both of Milwaukee, Jordan Klinge, Farmersburg, Iowa, Ty Kluesener, Milwaukee and Jed McLimans, New Albin, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her father Gene Lee and mother Janice Lee; son-in-law Mike Page; and brother-in-law Eric Temte.

There will be a visitation Friday, June 10, at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the family plot at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church.
