Jimmy Hansel, 66, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Visitation was Thursday, June 30, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Burial was Sunday, July 3, at the Hansel Cemetery, rural Garber. A luncheon followed at the Elkport Community Center.

Jimmy was born on Feb. 28, 1950, near Edgewood, the son of Donald and Mildred Hansel.

Jimmy received his education from the Central Community School where he graduated with the class of 1969. Five months after high school, Jimmy entered the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. He received an early honorable discharge on May 20, 1971, due to his service overseas. On Aug. 28, 1971, Jimmy was united in marriage with Janet Knudtson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. They were married for 44 years and were blessed with three children.

Jimmy retired in 2001 from John Deere in Dubuque after 30 years of employment. In addition, Jimmy served as a Guttenberg E.M.T. and Ambulance Driver, Reserve Police Officer, and Volunteer for the American Red Cross in both local and national disasters. Most recently, he was involved with AmVets and was a proud member of the Northeast Iowa Combat Veterans’ Motorcycle Association 39-3.

Jimmy will be forever loved and cherished by his wife, Janet; three children, Jeremy Hansel of La Porte City, Josh (Heather) Hansel of Garnavillo and Jessica (Kirk) Brecht of Swisher; four grandchildren, Breanna, Dylan, Lainey, and Lucas; four siblings, Jerry Hansel, Rick (Sue) Hansel, Danny (Dianna) Hansel and Joyce (John) Blume and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Judy Brown.

In lieu of flowers and all types of sympathy, memorials would be greatly appreciated to benefit two organizations that meant a great deal to Jimmy, Northeast Iowa Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 39-3 and American Red Cross.
