Larry Meyer

As MFL MarMac’s new high school principal, Larry Meyer is again walking the halls he traversed as a student.

“The physical plan [of the building] has changed, but the feel is still the same,” said Meyer, a 1977 MFL graduate. “It’s a good feeling. It feels right to be home.”

Meyer, the son of Neil and Gini, grew up on a farm three miles east of Monona with sisters Jill, Lynn and Amy and brother Brian. His interest in education began at a young age.

“I knew in junior high that I wanted to be a teacher because of the teachers I had,” he shared. “They made me say, ‘I want to be like them, to be involved with kids.’”

Meyer said the feeling was reinforced in high school, as he determined teaching and coaching could keep him connected with sports and people.

Following high school, he attended the University of Iowa, where he pursued a degree in education and also played baseball. Meyer later transferred to Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, where he played baseball and earned his teaching degree, with a physical education major and minors in biological sciences and math.

In 1981, Meyer began his career in Garnavillo, teaching there, and later at Clayton Ridge, for around 20 years. He then taught in Colorado for several years before moving back to Iowa in 2005, to begin teaching and coaching at Maquoketa Valley.

Meyer recently obtained a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. He accepted the position at MFL MarMac—his first principal job—in May. His duties officially began July 1.

“I never thought I would come back [to MFL MarMac]. It’s incredible that the circle is being completed,” admitted Meyer, who said becoming a principal appealed to him because he wanted the challenge of leading both staff and students. Not ready to retire, he said it also offers another way to continue educating and connecting with others.

“Life is about connections with people,” he said. “I couldn’t find a better place.”

Meyer remarked that he’s been blessed with a warm, welcoming response from the MFL MarMac community, which he said has added to his feeling of homecoming. He’ll make his home in Monona, where he plans to get married in December, to fiancee Anne Wise. Meyer has three children—Lexi, Brett and Heidi—while Anne has two kids—Hanna and Chase.

Meyer said he’s been especially impressed with the MFL MarMac staff, commending their dedication to professional development.

He said he looks forward to building relationships with staff and students, in addition to helping students become educationally better.

“It’s always about the kids,” Meyer explained. “It’s about developing well-rounded individuals who are ready for any educational challenges and prepared to deal with life to the best of their abilities.”

Meyer stated he knows this new position will be a challenge, but vowed he’s ready for it.

“We have to remember to keep things fun while taking care of business,” he said.
