Roger Lee Ross, 85, formerly of McGregor, passed away on Friday, Nov. 4, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Roger was born in Waukon, on Feb. 6, 1931, to the late Deva Knapp Ross and Arnold Ross. Roger had many fond memories of his years spent in McGregor along the Mississippi River, where he enjoyed swimming, fishing, winter time hockey and continued his love of boating on into his final years. Roger attended college in Iowa and later graduated in California, where he enjoyed playing basketball as a student-athlete at San Jose State and Fresno State University.

Roger served honorably in the U.S. Army at the conclusion of the Korean War, when he was stationed in Japan. After his return, he began a long career in the college textbook publishing industry in sales and as an acquisitions editor. While in Los Angeles, Roger met and later married his wife, Phyllis. Together they moved back to the midwest, while Roger continued a 20-year career with the Richard D. Irwin Inc. college textbook publishing company. Later, Roger began his own company, Ross Publishers Inc., publishing college manuals on behalf of numerous universities throughout the country.

Family and friends often viewed Roger as a “renaissance man” in knowledge, interests, and wisdom. He enjoyed meeting and talking with people from all walks of life. Roger vigorously supported politics and social programs to help his fellow man, stemming from a passion to leave the world a better place. He will be missed by family and friends who admire and appreciate his special qualities and are thankful to have learned from his example.

Roger is survived by his loving children, Christopher L. Ross and wife Julia, Matthew C. Ross and wife Heather; grandchildren, Ryan C. Ross, Sawyer A. Ross, Caroline M. Ross, James C. Ross, Carter M. Ross; sister, Mary Ross; many extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis T. Ross and brother, Charles Ross.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 25, at Anderson McQueen, 2201 Dr. MLK Street N. St. Petersburg, FL 33704.
