Prairie du Chien

completes sweep

The Prairie du Chien basketball team completed the weekend sweep by defeating Dodgeville at Dodgeville 65-46 and Viroqua at home on Saturday night 71-51.

In the Friday night game, the key to this game was the team defense played by Hawks and being very efficient on the offensive end. Prairie du Chien limited their turnovers and kept pounding the ball inside to multiple players during the game. The Hawks were down one starter due to illness but the team responded by playing great defense and limiting Bryce Prohaska’s (Dodgeville post player) touches and holding Isac Nagel(last game scored 25 points) to 10 points by harassing both of them all night with multiple players.

On the offensive end, the selfless Hawks were very efficient by assisting on the 17 of the 27 made field goals during the game. The Hawks controlled the pace of the game and made the extra pass for a better shot during the game.  They played with great determination and grit throughout the contest as Dodgeville was looking to crawl back in the SWC race.

Prairie du Chien was paced by Wesley Schwager - 20 points, Josh Lenzendorf - 14 points and 7 assists, and Chas Sagedahl - 17 points and 7 rebounds.

The win streak was extended to 12 games on Saturday night.

Saturday night was a different story for the Hawks.  Prairie du Chien started out very slow as Viroqua jumped out to an 11-4 lead. The Hawks started the first half by going 1-11 from the 3-point line abd were rushing their shots versus Viroqua’s inspired play.

Viroqua played inspired basketball by hitting five 3-pointers in the first half. The Hawks’ intensity increased by applying full court pressure and high court traps the last five minutes of the half to take a 5-point lead.

Josh Lenzendorf and Wes Schwager paced the Hawks in the first half with 8 points and 6 points.

In the second half, the Hawks extended the lead to 10 points twice but Viroqua showed tremendous grit and closed the gap to 2 points with 5 minutes to go. Prairie du Chien erupted for 16 points the last 4 minutes highlighted by two spirited dunks on the fast break to get the student section excited in the second half.

Eleven players scored for the Hawks as Wes Schwager  led the team in scoring with 23 points. The Hawks bench came up big with 25 points led Cory Check with three 3-pointers and a contribution of 10 total points.

Prairie du Chien will be playing for the SWC Championship on Tuesday night at home versus Platteville. Platteville is currently 7-1 (SWC) and looking to pull into a first place tie with Prairie du Chien.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
