John K. Hart, Jr., consummate musician, wit, and dear friend to many died Jan. 14, at the age of 66.

John was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., to John K. Hart, Sr., and Wilda (Arnot) Hart. The family moved to Illinois and John spent most of his childhood in Arlington Heights.

Around 1968, John set off for Iowa City, Iowa, and became a connoisseur of the world and all it had to offer. He kept returning to Iowa City, but lived for periods of time in Haight-Asbury, San Francisco. He worked as a cook, which allowed him to make a living wherever he landed. He traveled the world, visiting Kabul, Munich and Paris, as well as many areas of the U.S.

John played guitar and bass and performed in many bands, his first being The Renegades, as a teen. After moving to the northeast Iowa area, most recently living on a farmstead in Farmersburg and in town in Monona, he performed in a number of local bands. John’s gruff exterior disguised the soul of a true romantic. Nothing brought John more joy than playing his music, whether it was with a band, or around his kitchen table with a friend.

John is survived by his brother David, of Monona, Iowa, who lived with John and has helped us in keeping John’s memories and music alive.

A celebration of life will be held for John Hart at Josie’s River Queen, McGregor, Iowa, Sunday, March 26, from 2 to 6 p.m. Bands will be playing and all musicians are welcome to come and jam.
