School board approves calendar

The Clayton Ridge School Board held a public hearing for the proposed 2017-2018 school district calendar on March 9. Members in attendance were John Heying, Christine Aulwes, Ellen Johnson, Jason Reimer, Kathy Ihde, Mike Finnegan and Alicia Helle.  Also in attendance were Shane Wahls, Andy Peterson, David Schlueter, Mary Seifert and Mindy Reimer.

Superintendent Wahls presented the proposed 2017-2018 school year calendar with a start date of Aug. 23, 2017, and end date of May 30, 2018.  After holding discussion and hearing comments, the public hearing ended at 7:16 p.m.

The regular monthly meeting of the school board commenced following the public hearing. 

Superintendent Wahls reported on 2017-2018 potential staff sharing arrangements, his visit to the Kirkwood Center, the Dean of Students/At-Risk Coordinator job description, a middle school roofing issue, an update on the K12 negotiation process and the canvass of the PPEL vote as supplied by the county auditor.

Principal Peterson’s report addressed state qualifiers in speech and FFA, Iowa Assessments and CPR in the high school, essential standards work, possible class sharing opportunities with Central, ALICE practices in both buildings, the results of the survey done on pre-school program options for 2017-2018, drivers' education, senior trip plans underway and elementary FAST Literacy data.  

Board members accepted the resignation of Roger Bockenstedt as girls varsity basketball coach.  

The 2017-2018 district calendar was unanimously approved as presented during the public hearing.

A certified budget hearing was scheduled for April 11, at 7 p.m. in the middle school library.  

An open enrollment application from Isabelle Prew was granted, allowing Prew to attend Clayton Ridge from the MFL/Mar-Mac District due to a change in residence.  An open enrollment application from Kaitelyn Fulks to attend Clayton Ridge from Central was also approved.

Board members approved the 28E Agreement with Northeast Iowa Community College for the Alternative High School during the 2017-2018 school year.  6.  Facility Use Agreements

The services of Spring Green Lawn Care were approved for the maintenance of the football field and other grounds surrounding the field for a total cost of $1,658.68.  

The board voted to send 10 teachers and administrators to the Summer PLC Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., in July for a cost of $669 per person plus travel expenses, with expenses paid from district teacher quality funds.  

Business Manager Dave Schlueter reviewed the FY16 audit report, which was approved as presented. O’Connor and Brooks were appointed to conduct the FY17 audit for a cost of $13,900.
