William Herbert Whyte, Jr., 86, of Cassville, passed away on Sunday, May 14, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster. 

 

He was born on Jan. 7, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of William H. and Elizabeth M. (Dittmar) Whyte, Sr. William graduated from Struthers High School, Struthers, Ohio. On Jan. 17, 1952, he was united in marriage to Delorese I. Neises. After graduation, William went to Marietta College. He left college to join his father in the construction business, which brought him to Cassville to construct Dairyland Power Generating Station. After completion of the Dairyland Plant, he was employed by Dubuque Boiler & Boat Co. in Dubuque, until 1951, when he joined the United States Marine Corp. William served his country full time until February 1954, but continued his services in the Marine Corp. Reserves until March of 1960. 

 

He was employed at Dairyland Power from 1954 until April of 1993, when he retired as the Operations Manager. William was active in the Cassville community. He served as a Village Trustee from 1975 until 1987, when he became Village President until 2000. William was an integral part of getting the Cassville Ferry in place. He was also a member of the Cassville Lions Club, serving as President, member of the Cassville Fire Department and the American Legion Post No. 352 of Cassville. William enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, and was an avid Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. 

 

Survivors include his sons Thomas John (Cindy) Whyte, Cassville, and Todd William (Julie) Whyte, Prairie du Chien; grandchildren TJ (Michele), Oregon, Ben (Jen), Evansville, Erin (Zach) Blasco, Belleville, Casey (Danielle), Madison, Christopher, Platteville, Jonathon, Prairie du Chien, Seth, La Crosse, Mollee (Woodrow Fulcher), La Crosse; great-grandchildren: Hanna, Lila, Cameron, Maddox, Quinn, Aveah and Colin; sister, Lois (John) Peters, Mechanicsburg, Penn., and their son and daughter; other relatives and friends.

 

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Delorese in 2000.

 

Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory, 313 Fredrick, Cassville, with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Cassville. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, May 17, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
