On Wednesday, May 17, 2017, in the comfort of her own home, with the love of her children by her side and the smell of coffee brewing and food cooking in the kitchen, Mildred Anna “Millie” Meyer, 92, of Dubuque was called by God to join her family, friends, and husband, Melvin, in Heaven.

Visitation was Sunday, May 21, at Eglehof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Homes and Cremation, Dubuque.

Funeral services were Monday, May 22, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Dubuque, conducted by Rev. Steven Rosonke and Rev. Michael Schueller.

Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.

Millie’s beautiful story began on Jan. 14, 1925, on the eve of the Great Depression; she was born the child of George and Dorothea (Nauman) Schueller in Spechts Ferry.

Always ready to work, as a child she loved her chores on the family farm and was especially fond of her chickens. She attended Sherrill Mound School. In eighth grade at a get-together with the Balltown School, she first met her future husband, Melvin. Or, as Millie said in her own words, “I guess I picked him out then already.” Millie, as a young woman, worked at the Smith Shoe Factory in Dubuque and Melvin served in WWII. When he returned from the service in 1946, they were married on Nov. 19, 1946. They were blessed with four beautiful children and farmed together in Balltown until their retirement in 1983, when they moved to Dubuque.

Throughout the years, Millie would cook, garden, play cards and entertain the many, many number of family and friends who would frequent her home. In fact, when visitors stopped by it was fair to say they were not the first visitor that day and wouldn’t be the last. She especially enjoyed when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren would stop by. There was always a homemade cookie ready for a snack or fresh bread to butter with some homemade jelly, and of course her famous homemade noodles. As Millie once said, “I’m a lot like my mom, always ready for people to come.”

After Melvin’s passing on Feb. 11, 2001, Millie’s energy and enthusiasm kept her moving and active—from purchasing her first car, to taking her first trip on an airplane and experiencing the ocean for the very first time. However, Millie’s favorite place to be was always her home to be sure she never missed a visitor to share that warm welcome, the smell of a home cooked meal, the kind ear and stories she could tell at a moment’s notice, and most importantly, the LOVE. Pure and simple, a truly amazing life lived by an equally amazing woman. You will be forever in our hearts.

Those left to honor and cherish Millie’s memory include her four children, Richard (Mary) Meyer, Patricia (Richard) Rotzoll, Michael (Laura) Meyer and Julie (Peter) Dupont; 10 grandchildren, Karie (Rod) Horsfield, Chad (Lynn) Vaske, Scott (Sandy) Vaske; Michelle (Dan) McDonald, Dawn (Adam) Eikamp, Jason (Sarah) Meyer, Joe (fiance’ Afton) Meyer; Jaime (Steve) Capesius, Benji (Jenny) Meyer; Amy Dupont; and two step-grandchildren: Becky (Randy) Vannorsdel, Bob (Kristi) Rotzoll; 27 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Levi, Erin, Nathan, Nolan, Kate, Lauren, Claire, Paige, Anna, McKenzie, Rylee, Jackson, Briella, Kobe, Ashlyn, Alayna, Brennan, Connor, Caroline, Grace, Charlie, Frank, George, Owen, Millie, Lawrence and her seven step great-grandchildren: Ben, Lina, Daenia, Ben, Nick, Kalin and Andrew; in-laws, Eleanor Schueller, Irene Schueller, Arnold and Shirley Meyer and Armella Meyer. All her special friends and neighbors include Dave and Sharon, and Cindy and Mary Lou.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Ron Vaske; sisters, Lucille (Norbert) Rolwes, Marie (Emmett) Cummer; brothers, Norbert (Marcella) Schueller, Alfred (Fritz) Schueller, Eldon Schueller, and George (Junior) Schueller.

A memorial fund has been established in Millie’s name.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Brian Sullivan and his staff at Medical Associates; Hospice of Dubuque, especially Melissa, Stacy, Mary and Tim; and all the family and friends who kept Millie’s house a loving home.
