The MFL MarMac School Board approved contracts for several new staff members at its June 12 meeting.

Samantha Corsbie will teach special education at the middle school next year, while Katie Kregel and Dacia Jacobsen will teach second grade. Second grade teacher Angie Pape will transfer to kindergarten.

In addition, contracts were approved for Brandi Crozier as a special education paraprofessional, Megan Schellhorn as assistant volleyball coach and Larry Walter as a bus driver.

Lunch payment policy

The school board endorsed a lunch payment policy that superintendent Dale Crozier said should hopefully give the district more leverage when dealing with parents who don’t pay their children’s lunch bills.

MFL MarMac, Crozier said, did not have an official policy, but already had practices in place to deal with the issue.

The policy encourages parents to pay their children’s lunch bills, noting that the school will offer students breakfast and lunch as long as the parent does not owe more than $75. At that point, meals could be refused. However, Crozier said that would not happen.

“We want people to pay their bills,” he said, “but we don’t want to punish kids for irresponsible adults.”

At a meeting last summer, Crozier said MFL MarMac had, at that time, $20,000 in outstanding lunch bills. That amount has decreased, though.

“We’re better than we were,” he told the board. “We’ve put a lot of time and effort into this. Most people eventually pay.”

Crozier said the policy can later be revised as the board sees fit.

School fees

The board approved increasing breakfast fees by 5 cents and lunch by 10 cents. The fee for driver’s education will also go up $25. Everything else will remain the same as last school year.

Preschool rating

Elementary principal Kathy Koether said, this spring, the MFL MarMac preschool received a Level 5 rating on the Quality Rating Scale (QRS) from the state. It’s the highest rating a preschool can receive when considering instruction, programs, curriculum and the student environment.

“It took a lot of work for our teachers to achieve,” Koether said. “This really helps promote our preschool programs.”
