Earl "Butch" Meyer
Earl William “Butch” Meyer, 79, passed away on Monday, June 26 at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness. He left this world surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
According to his wishes, there will be no visitation. Private gravesite services were held by the family at the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Earl was born on Dec. 1, 1937, the son of Earl and Lillian (Duehr) Meyer. In his youth he especially enjoyed rabbit hunting with his dad and time spent with his grandfather, William.
The day after graduating from St. Mary’s high school, Earl joined the army and was stationed in Germany. While there he met and married his wife Anna (Weisser) with whom he spent the last 58 years of his life. He worked at a creamery in Guttenberg through high school, and after his time in the army for 32 years at John Deere. He was fortunate to enjoy 25 years of retirement. He enjoyed hunting and shooting, was an avid reader, loved history, and especially time spent with his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Anna; his children, Mike (Renee) Meyer of Dubuque, Tony (Laura) Meyer of Vinton, Mary (Clarence) Blea of Eagle, ID, Brian Meyer of Guttenberg, and Chris (Erin) Meyer of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Helen (Tony) Klug of Brown Deer, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bruce, and beloved grandson Nolan. In lieu of a memorial the family asks that you make a small donation to St. Judes Children’s Hospital.
