Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg visited Pikes Peak State Park, outside McGregor, on Aug. 31, where Reynolds signed a proclamation declaring September “Drive the Great River Road Month” in Iowa.

Taking part in the event were Edith Pfeffer, Iowa chair of the Mississippi River Parkway Commission (MRPC), as well as local MRPC commissioners Jenna Pollock (Clayton County) and Jane Regan (Allamakee County. Other participants included McGregor Mayor Harold Brooks, McGregor City Administrator Lynette Sander, McGregor Deputy Clerk Duane Boelman, McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kristie Austin, Marquette Mayor Larry Breuer, former Clayton County MRPC Commissioner MJ Smith, State Senator Michael Breitbach, Jim Nepstad and Albert LeBeau from Effigy Mounds National Monument, Kevin Hansen from the Guttenberg Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, Iowa State Parks Bureau Chief Todd Coffelt, Northeast Iowa District Parks Supervisor Scot Michelson and Pikes Peak State Park Manager Matt Tschirgi.

In signing the proclamation, Reynolds invites motorists to travel the 341 miles of the Iowa Great River Road throughout the month of September. The route includes 16 national interpretive centers, including Effigy Mounds and the Guttenberg Fish Hatchery and Aquarium. Stops along the Great River Road also feature natural beauty, historical sites and unique, family-friendly events. Iowa agriculture is on display, with orchards, cheese factories, nurseries, wineries and farmers markets.

The Great River Road is a 3,000-mile national scenic byway that runs through 10 states, from Minnesota to Louisiana. It is one of the oldest, longest and most unique byways in North America, offering a gateway to the Mississippi River Valley’s history and cultural and recreational opportunities.

After signing the proclamation, Reynolds and Gregg enjoyed a tour of Pikes Peak.
