Eugene Leonard Cahoon, 89, of Monona, Iowa died Thursday, Nov. 2, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. 

 

Eugene was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Allamakee County, Iowa, the fourth of four children to Elbert and Esther (VanCura) Cahoon. He served in the United States Army from May 1951 to April 1953. Eugene served as a P.F.C. Wire Chief in Germany and was honorably discharged.

 

Eugene farmed all of his adult life. He loved bowling, playing cards, spending time at local casinos, traveling and family gatherings. He moved to his hobby farm in 1984 and retired from farming in 1987. Eugene spent the last years of his life at Garden View Assisted Care in Monona, Iowa, and Good Samaritan Society in Postville, Iowa.

 

Eugene is survived by his companion of twenty-eight years, Joyce Harry; his sister, Burgette Hart; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

 

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Esther Cahoon; his aunt, Girdy VanCura; sister, Arlene Cahoon; brother, Wilbur Cahoon; sister-in-law, Janie Cahoon; and a brother-in-law, Paul Hart.

 

Graveside Service with Military Honors were held on Monday, Nov. 6, at Sixteen Cemetery, rural Linton Township. Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa, is helping the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.graufuneralhomes.com.
