For 98 years, Americans have remembered those who served our country in uniform on Nov. 11—first as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954, as Veterans Day.

This year, Veterans Day will fall on a Saturday. As communities, schools, Legions and other organizations observe this special day, some events will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11, while others will happen on a weekday before or after the holiday. The public is welcome to attend all of the following.

•The Crawford County Veterans Day program will be held Nov. 11 at Century Hall in Wauzeka at 7 p.m., hosted by Post 446 of Steuben. Theresa Brewer, a Persian Gulf veteran from Boscobel, is the guest speaker for the evening.

•Seneca Schools has scheduled its Veterans Day program at the school for Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m.

•Prairie du Chien School District is hosting two ceremonies in recognition of area veterans, both on Friday, Nov. 10. First, there will be an 8:30 a.m. ceremony at Bluff View School, and then a 10 a.m. program at the high school.

•River Ridge High School will host a program, Honoring Our Veterans, on Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. A complementary lunch for all veterans and their spouses will be served afterward in the multi-purpose room. Call (608) 994-2715 to RSVP.

•Wauzeka-Steuben Schools will hold its Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 10, at 10:30 a.m. in the Doll Gym.

•Prairie Maison will have a program at 2 p.m.

•Prairie Catholic School will have a Veterans Day program starting at 2 p.m. Students’ pictures and projects will be displayed at the program. Tom Farrell is the keynote speaker.

•The Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans Association is hosting an All Veterans Day Celebration in Strawberry Point Saturday, Nov. 11. A parade starts at 11 a.m., with a speaker, lunch and program to follow at the civic center afterward. Prizes will be awarded to the best floats with an Allegiance to the Flag theme.

•A Veterans Day Dance, thrown by the Larry Busch 14-piece Big Band, will be at Vesperman Farms in Lancaster Saturday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 11 p.m. Posting of the colors will be done at 7 p.m. sharp. Then, music of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s will offer a tribute to veterans attending and delight the crowd, including swing, foxtrot, waltz, cha-cha, rhumba, tango and polka. Dancers will enjoy a large, wooden dance floor and hors d’oeurves, along with beverages to be purchased. Tickets can be purchased at Vesperman Farms in advance or at the door.
