One man was pronounced dead and another was severely injured in a semi versus truck crash that occurred between the Wisconsin-Iowa bridge Monday morning, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 8:58 a.m., Nov. 6, officers were called to the scene on Highway 18 and found that a 2005 Kenworth semi, owned and operated by Robert Wiemerslage, 63, of Spring Grove, Minn., had struck a 2009 Ford F150, operated by Raul Rivera Negron, 49, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, head-on.

According to eyewitnesses, Wiemerslage was pulling an empty grain trailer west on the highway toward Iowa. He had been talking to his wife, Mary, 65, a passenger in the semi, when, without warning, he slumped over onto her lap. The semi crossed over into the eastbound lane, struck the guardrail and then bounced back onto the highway, colliding with the 2009 Ford head-on. After hitting the truck, the semi pushed it backward about 300 feet before coming to a stop, with both vehicles in the eastbound lane.

Rivera Negron was extricated from his truck, transported to Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien and later medflighted to a La Crosse hospital. He suffered several broken bones and possible internal injuries, according to the sheriff’s department.

Robert Wiemerslage was transported to Crossing Rivers Health, where he was pronounced dead. Mary Wiemerslage was transported to Crossing Rivers for non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage and were towed from the scene by Bob’s Towing. Highway 18 was closed to through-traffic for approximately one hour.

Assisting at the scene were the Prairie du Chien Police Department, Crawford County Highway Department, rural Bridgeport fire and first responders, Clayton County Sheriff’s Department, MarMac Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Tri-State EMS and MarMac Rescue Squad.
