Split week for Central girls’ basketball team

December 18 found the Central girls facing a strong Maquoketa Valley team. Central trailed 21-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.  Maquoketa Valley led 35-19 at the half and went on to win the game by a score of 66-19.
Hannah Erickson led the team in scoring with eight points. Natalie Schroeder had five points and Gabrielle Lenth had four points. Danielle Weber had two points. Riley Schroeder had seven rebounds to lead the Warriors. Gabrielle Lenth had six rebounds, while Hannah Erickson had four rebounds.  Hannah Erickson led the team with five steals. Natalie Schroeder and Danielle Weber had two steals each.  Danielle Weber and Hannah Erickson each had two assists.
“We played a pretty good first half, but could not find offense in the second half,” Coach Mark Wiley said.  “We were very active in the first half and our press did cause some fits for Maquoketa Valley.”
On December 19 the girls played Clayton Ridge. Central fell behind, 10-9, at the end of the 1st quarter and trailed 20-16 at the half. The Warriors were still behind in the 3rd quarter, 30-27, but surged ahead in the 4th, winning by a score of 39-32.
Central was lead in scoring by Hannah Erickson with 16 points. Gabrielle Lenth had two field goals and was five for six from the free throw line to total nine points. Natalie Schroeder had six points on two three point field goals in the fourth quarter. Danielle  Weber had four points, while Lizzie Gifford and Riley Schroeder each had two points.
Lizzie Gifford led the team in the rebounding category with 11 on the evening. Lenth had nine rebounds. Hannah Erickson pulled down seven defensive rebounds. Riley Schroeder and Danielle Weber each had four rebounds.
Hannah Erickson led the team with four steals. Danielle Weber and Natalie Schroeder each had two steals. Ariel Dennler, Lizzie Gifford, and Gabrielle Lenth had one steal each.
“Our defense was outstanding in the second half and we were contesting shots,” Coach Wiley said.  “We rebounded really well in the second half of the game, which gave us nine second chance points.”
Hannah Erickson led the team with three assists. Ariel Dennler, Danielle Weber, and Natalie Schroeder each had an assist.
“This is an area we will continue to work on over break,” Coach Wiley commented.  “We have to make the extra pass and convert on open shots, especially in transition.”
