A longtime Prairie du Chien businessman, Richard C. “Dick” Stark, 82, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Mayo Health System in La Crosse, following a brief illness. 

 

He was born Feb. 20, 1935, in Platteville, the son of Frank and Blanche (Strnad) Stark. Dick went to work in the family business at an early age for his father at Stark’s Sport Shop in Prairie du Chien. He entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He married Janice Paulus on Sept. 26, 1957. Dick would later own and operate Stark’s Sport Shop in Prairie du Chien. 

 

He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. He was renowned for his closeness to his customers and employees throughout his many years in business. Janice preceded him in death on May 14, 2012. 

 

He is survived by his sons, Randy (Deidre) and Ron Stark; his siblings, Joanne Valley, Larry Stark, Blanche Bily, and Paul (Sue) Stark; half brothers, Dan (Jess) and Greg (Terri) Stark; his grandchildren, Alex (Libby) Stark, Abbey (Andy) Nohr, Andrew Spach and Afton Stark; along with great grandchildren, Ava and Riley Stark and Zoey Nohr. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister Mary. 

 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with interment in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Thursday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m., until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred which will be donated to The American Cancer Society. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
