Prairie takes down Lancaster to win SWC title

The Prairie du Chien grappling Blackhawks played host to visiting Lancaster in a winner take all dual meet that would determine the Southwest Wisconsin Conference Champion on Monday evening.

Prior to the start of the meet, all youth wrestlers K-8 were introduced as were past PDC alumni to the wrestling program. The jam packed crowd would not be disappointed in this battle of two state-ranked teams.

The match started at 285#, where Lancaster’s state-ranked wrestler would win by fall over Jerrod Osterkamp. At 106#, the Blackhawks would send Jackson DeBruin to toe the line with another state-ranked wrestler from Lancaster. Again, Lancaster would win by fall. At 113#, PDC would bump our own state-ranked Matt Rogge up a weight to take on a quality opponent. In the end, a first period reversal by Lancaster would be the difference in a closely contested 4-3 loss to make it Lancaster 15, PDC 0.

The Blackhawks needed something to get the crowd going. Again, Lancaster would send a state-ranked wrestler at 120# to face Keenan Holley. The crowd continued to be silent as Holley was down 4-0 at the end of the first period. In period two, Holley would quickly score on a reversal and hit an outside cradle for two near fall. The Lancaster wrestler would fight off his back and score a reversal of his own. But, in period three, Holley would get a takedown and again lock up an outside cradle; this time for the fall. This ignited the PDC faithful in the loudest way our gym has heard this winter.

At 126#, Bradyn Saint would face yet another ranked wrestler from Lancaster. Saint would dominate with a 13-4 major decision. In the third period, realizing bonus points would be crucial, Saint scored three takedowns and four near fall points. At 132#, Reid Koenig would keep the crowd in it with a quick first period fall. After a quick single leg, Koenig would hit a crunch cradle on the outside of the mat and stick his opponent. At 138#, Blake Garcia would get a very workman like 6-0 decision. Garcia controlled the mat and rode his opponent for the better part of the match. At 145#, in a battle of returning state qualifiers, Traeton Saint would dismantle his opponent with an 18-3 technical fall. This consisted of six takedowns and six near fall points.

At 152#, Tyler Smock would keep the momentum for PDC. After a first period takedown, Smock get an over under tie and toss his opponent to his back for the fall. At 160#, in a battle of state-ranked wrestlers, Nick Rogge would score a takedown on a nice high post with a couple of near fall points. He would then secure an outside cradle and deck his opponent. Lancaster was able to win at 170#, with an exciting 12-10 decision over Isaac Avery. Lancaster received a forfeit at 182#. 195# was another battle of returning state qualifiers. Lancaster would win by decision over Stephen Ronnfeldt, 10-3. In the final match of the night, Colten Wall would take on another state-ranked wrestler. After a scoreless first period, Wall would turn up the heat and score five points in period two, capped by an outside cradle. In period three, Wall would score another takedown and win with a 7-0 decision. Final score: PDC 39, Lancaster 27.

The Blackhawks are now 21-1 on the season. This shatters the program record for most dual wins a season of 15, which had been done twice (03-04 and 04-05). The one dual loss is also a record. This is the fourth conference title in program history (all happening since 2004) but it is the first time in program history that they’ve won the title outright by themselves.

The next action for the Blackhawks will be the SWC/SWAL Clash on Saturday at Mineral Point. Start time is 10 a.m. Go Blackhawks!
