The 10th Annual Bald Eagle Watching Day in Ferryville will be Saturday, March 3, at the Village Community Center located on State Highway 35. This program is sponsored by the Ferryville Tourism Council, co-sponsored by Friends of Pool 9 and free to the public.

Event activities are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Returning to program is the Decorah Raptor Research Project with a presentation on the Decorah, Iowa, Eagle Cam organization and “What We Learned from an Eagle’s Nest” at 12 p.m. John Howe and Amy Reis and their team will, for the second time, provide detailed information. For the ninth year, another highlight of the program will be the University of Minnesota Raptor Center’s live raptor and eagle presentations at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kelsey Griffin will be the presenter and she also plans to discuss how the bald eagles have returned to this area in increasing numbers and what you can do to support this effort to help the eagles flourish.

The rest of the day is scheduled as follows.

At 9 a.m., Dr. Michael White, with the help of children from the audience, will build a bald eagle nest. Learn how huge these nests are, how heavy they are and how they are constructed.

At 9:30 a.m, Brenda Kelly, a DNR wildlife biologist from the La Crosse district, will present “Duck, Duck, Goose,” telling stories about the ducks and geese of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife Refuge–Pool 9.

At 11:30 a.m., folks will have the chance to partake in a hooting contest, with awards and ribbons in five age categories. Practice up and see if you are one of the champion hooters.

At 12:10 p.m., there will be a middle school art awards presentation for students and teachers of Seneca, De Soto and St. Charles schools.

At 1:15, Kelly McKay will talk about “Night Roosts of the Eagles” and his research.

Free refreshments and children’s craft activities will be available throughout the event. Do you love treats, especially eagle and owl cookies, hot chocolate, coffee, Kickapoo Orchards cider and fresh apple slices from Oakwood Fruit Farm? Be sure to enjoy these on your visit to Ferryville’s Bald Eagle Day festivities. Local restaurants will feature specials all day.

Ferryville, located right on the Mississippi River, is an ideal place to host Bald Eagle Day. There are many eagle nests in the area, including a new one just south of Ferryville. The Pool 9 section has more nests than in any other part of the Mississippi River. For additional information, go to visitferryville.com or find Ferryville on Facebook.
