Verla Mae Wessel, of Edgewood, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018, at her home in Edgewood.

Private family services were held at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, conducted by Pastor Erika Kielstrup.

Interment was Hansel Cemetery, rural Garber.

Verla was born in Jefferson Township, Clayton County, on Oct. 19, 1928, the daughter of James and Selma (Schroeder) Zearley. 

Verla graduated from Colesburg High School in 1946. She married Willard Wessel in Manchester on Nov. 1, 1947. The couple had four children. Following Willard’s death on Sept. 13, 1975, Verla moved to Edgewood and worked in assembly at the Ertl factory in Dyersville. 

Verla enjoyed flowers, gardening, and cooking. She cherished time spent with her family. 

Survivors include her children, Francis “Butch” Wessel of Cedar Rapids, Carol (Jim) Lenth of Farmersburg, Susan (Bill) Fuelling of Monona, and Janet (Jim) Kelchen of Edgewood; six grandchildren, Jared Lenth, Joshua Lenth, Katie (Wade) Kregel, Kristen (Walt) Zabel, Megan Kelchen, and Michael Kelchen; two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Addyson Kregel; two brothers, Carl Zearley and Lewis (Cindy) Zearley, all of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Lylas Pensel of Earlville. 

Verla was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; her parents; and a brother, James Zearley, Jr.
