Donald Francis Berns, 81, of Garnavillo, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader.

Funeral services were Monday, April 16, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Don was born July 25, 1936, in Monona, the son of Raymond and Mae (Farmer) Berns. He attended high school graduating with the class of 1954. Don entered into the United States Army serving from October 1955 until his discharge in October of 1958.  Don met and married the love of his life, Carolyn Klinkenberg on Oct. 24, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. To this union two children were born, Lee and Dee.  Don spent most of his life farming the land that he raised his family on. He enjoyed spending time with the love of his life; his children and his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lee Berns of Garnavillo, Dee (John) Hense of Strawberry Point; grandchildren, NaTasha, Dustin (fiancé Kara Winch), Dalton Berns, Matthew Hense; one great-granddaughter, Adaline Marie Berns; three sisters, Marilyn (Jim) Kann of Garnavillo, Jane (David) Siegel of Cedar Rapids, Jeanette (Pat) Thein of Colesburg; plus many other nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn in 2015; brother, Norman Berns; sister, Mary Schmitz.
