96th Assembly District candidates announce hopes for Nerison’s seat
Paul Buhr, Alicia Leinberger, Ahna Key, Loren Oldenburg
Both Democratic and Republican parties will consider nominees in the Aug. 14 partisan primary election for the 96th Assembly District. Both parties will choose their nominations to the ballot, via which the successor to Rep. Lee Nerison will be chosen and the incumbent’s vacancy filled.
Currently, there are three Democrats and two Republicans who have registered with the Wisconsin Elections Commission for the office:
•Paul Buhr, a Viroqua area dairy farmer and herd genetics marketer;
•Alicia Leinberger, second-time candidate, Viroqua small business owner and renewable energy entrepreneur;
•Jess Mark Johnson, of Viroqua (no photo available);
•Ahna Key, a Marquette University student, former intern for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson who worked on his 2016 re-election campaign, and Prairie du Chien native making her first run for office;
•Loren Oldenburg, the fourth-generation owner and operator of Oldenburg Centennial Farms in Viroqua.
The filing deadline to run for office is 5 p.m. on June 1. The 96th Assembly District contains parts of Crawford, Monroe and Vernon counties.
Buhr, Leinberger and Oldenburg have all publicly announced their campaigns.
Alicia Leinberger, in fact, did so in Prairie du Chien Friday, April 27, on the steps at city hall.
All of the candidates have been making appearances at a number of public events as early as March.
