Deputy Grand Knight Scott Kennedy (second from right), of Prairie du Chien, received a plaque for being first in membership in the La Crosse Diocese and second in the state. The honor was presented by State Deputy Tim Guski, of Superior, with other state officers there too.

The state of Wisconsin Knights of Columbus has over 300 local councils, both large and small, including Campion Council 1840 in Prairie du Chien. The local council was recognized and did not go unnoticed when over 700 Knights gathered at the organization’s state convention in Middleton, April 28-29.

The Prairie du Chien council was recognized for its recruitment of new members, first in the La Crosse Diocese and second in the state. They were presented a check from the state for being the first to achieve over 200 percent of their goals, and their program book of activities won a bronze award.

From June of last year, the Prairie du Chien Knights have given over $2,000 to the Opportunity Center, Badger Camp, Special Olympics and special education. All the money for these local groups came from the council’s Tootsie Roll Drive. In April, the Knights collected over $1,000 more for 2018 than any previous year and 75 percent of the money will remain local. The Prairie Knights also held a Coats for the Community Drive, giving away over 300 new or like-new coats, rang the Salvation Army bell for a weekend, organized and funded the community Easter Egg Hunt with over 6,000 eggs, sponsored the Prairie du Chien Boy Scout Troop, and, in total, gave over $10,000 to organizations, individuals and charitable causes.

Because they were an exemplary council, the Grand Knight of Prairie du Chien was asked to represent the State Knights along with seven others throughout Wisconsin at the National Supreme Convention in Baltimore this August.
