Eric Fuerstenberg

By Correne Martin

A Bluff View Intermediate School paraprofessional has come up with a creative way to raise funds to stock young adult books in the school’s IC (intervention center).

Eric Fuerstenberg is raffling off the chance for students to shave his hair, in exchange for donations to be used toward expanding the number of books available for check-out to middle schoolers for book reports and Reading Counts points.

Just $1 buys a ticket, or you can get six tickets for $5. Mostly students and faculty have been buying the raffle chances thus far, but the community is encouraged to get involved, too. Monetary donations toward the books or simply contributions of young adult books are welcome.

On the last day of school, June 7, a name will be drawn from a hat of the person who gets the great honor of shaving Fuerstenberg’s hair.

“All the students can watch,” he said.

Fuerstenberg, who works one-on-one with the students in fifth through eighth grade, recognized the need when he realized the IC’s books were getting picked over. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are required to do one book report per month, and if you add up the number of kids times nine months of the school year, that equals a lot of books. Additionally, fifth through eighth graders have a certain amount of time each day they devote to DERT time (drop everything and read today).

“Reading is where education has hit a plateau,” Fuerstenberg noted. “With all the focus on math and the advancements in technology, reading has taken a back seat.”

The aide added that his intent is to continue to make reading interesting and exciting for the Bluff View students.

To support this endeavor with monetary or book donations, contact the IC or the school office, 326-3722.
