Alfred J. “Fritz” Recker, 92, passed away Friday, June 15, at his home with his daughter Karen at his side.

He was born Nov. 6, 1925, the son of Andrew and Josephine (Ovel) Recker. Fritz attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Bloomington and graduated from the eighth grade. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he served with the 82nd Ordnance Group in Austria, as an automotive mechanic.

Fritz married Rita A. Hamilton on June 24, 1961, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove. Together they raised a family and farmed in Bloomington Township. In his free time as a young man, Fritz enjoyed dancing at the VFW Club in Bloomington. He also enjoyed bowling with the Economy Feed Mill team and playing euchre with the Neighborhood card club. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. Following his retirement, he earned his GED and proudly participated in courses at UW-Madison.

Fritz was a complicated sum of 92 years of life experiences as son, brother, veteran, bachelor, husband, widower, provider, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. In all aspects, he gave his best, the best way he knew. His life accomplishments particularly reflect his intelligence, integrity and remarkable work ethic.

He is survived by three children Rodney (Janie) Recker, Karen (Elliot Rose) Recker, and Kristine (Don Terkelsen) Recker; grandchildren Andrew, Ian and Carolyn Bigott and Rita and Helen Simpson.

Fritz was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, in 2001; siblings Philomena (Leo) Steinl, Julia (Henry) Gruender, Ludwina (William S.) Mergen, Dolores (Carroll) Klinkhammer and Victor (Alice) Recker.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 22, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Fr. John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Blake’s Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Friends and family may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church where a parish rosary service will be held at 8:45 a.m. The Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Bloomington is assisting the family with services.
