On June 18, the Monona city council met to discuss current issues within the city and how they can become better.

Police report

With the police department facing a busy season, they wished to remind the council and the community to not blow grass clippings on the streets. If more than one occurrence happens at one residence, the owner of the property will receive a fine.

In addition, as the police department has received approximately 30 requests to deal with animal-related issues, the council wants to remind the community that the police officers will no longer be put at risk of harm by stray and wild animals. The police department is not animal control. Instead, the DNR should be contacted. A plan for what the community should do is in the works within city government, as these reports are becoming more of a challenge to deal with.

Cameras are ready to be set up in the park to monitor animal movement in the area, with the location of the cameras to be determined, along with where the recording systems and screens will be housed.

Parade

The council approved the Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans’ and the Clayton County/Monona AmVets Post 27’s request for the Veteran’s Day Parade route. The route will begin at the Monona city park before heading west on Chestnut. The parade will then turn north on Main and will end at Center Street. A wreath laying and gun salute will take place at the ending location of the parade, with a speaker and meal afterward at the community center. These events will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, starting at 11 a.m.

Other business

•The swimming pool report included the need for repair of the building’s front door. The council mentioned the possibility of a completely new door to replace the broken one. Also, it was mentioned that some pumps and motors should be examined and serviced so the pool may continue to run smoothly.

•The PeopleService report included information that the city’s chlorine and sulfur dioxide system needs maintenance completed, including service on the pumps.

•The city’s fire department was authorized to use recreational vehicles on city streets during the Fourth of July celebration.

•The council decided the best option for the interest rate of the Garden View Loan with Freedom Bank was to agree to a one-year agreement with up to a 4 percent interest rate.

•Resolution No. 2018-28, related to the city’s annexations of 13 parcels of land along the southeast boundary of the city, was finalized and the addition of these small areas were finalized.

•The council moved for the installation of two acorn style lamps on top of existing decorative street light poles at the corner of North Main and Central streets. The members recognized that citizens have found the brightness of the street lights to be a nuisance. They hope to diminish this problem by changing the wattage of the bulbs used.
