Crawford County will be receiving $2,525,931 for six bridge projects in the county. The funding is part of an additional $38.6 million that will fund 70 more local bridge projects statewide for the 2018-2022 Local Bridge Improvement Program cycle. These bridges are in addition to 113 bridges that previously received $76.4 million in this funding cycle. This additional $38.6 million was approved by the joint finance committee and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), bringing total funding for the local bridge program to $115 million.

The local bridge program has adopted a replace-in-kind policy where emphasis is placed on a safe and effective bridge on the existing bridge footprint. The local bridge program helps finance projects that replace the existing structure, with necessary adjustments made for current standards, safety and other factors. Local funds may be used for enhancement beyond that scope based on local priorities.

This announcement brings the total to 183, which is the total number of applications received.

Crawford County Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock said his application for funding for the 2018-2022 cycle includes six bridge construction projects in Crawford County have now approved by the DOT.

Pelock said the bridges include the Tiller Road bridge in the town of Clayton for $302,670, the bridge on County H for $312,707, the bridge on Byers Road in the town of Scott for $298,116, the Norwegian Hollow Road Bridge in the town of Clayton for $621,832, the Sand Hill Road Bridge in the village of Bell Center for $676,317, and the Marrietta Valley Road Bridge in the town of Marrietta for $314,292.

Pelock said the Local Bridge Program provides funding for 80 percent of the construction costs. He said the county, towns and villages will share the remaining 20 percent of the construction costs as well as design costs.

Program cost savings due to the elimination of management consultant contracts to deliver the local program, the implementation of a replace-in-kind funding policy and the streamlining of DOT oversight tasks have allowed for the additional funding.

Crawford County has numerous deficient bridges that need upgrading. Two bridges being built this spring and summer include one on County U and another on County C, about a half mile west of Star Valley.

The estimate for the County C bridge was $446,000. The estimate for the County U bridge was $505,000.

Crawford County has been upgrading numerous bridges over the past several years.
