Murals class makes its illustrative mark

Maria, Mariah, Ruby and Breanna trace the Sharpie-stenciled graphics with pencil, a technique that works on regular paper to simply transfer a design onto the wall.

The mural follows the theme “Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.” This portion shows the diverse aspects and drawing styles incorporated into the artwork.

This traced hand print is one example of those created by art club and summer mural session students. Each “hand” will be added to the completed mural.

MFL MarMac Middle School has hosted a special summer art program including two clay sessions and one murals class. 

In one of the school’s hallways, students and their teachers placed a paper mural sketch that they started during art club in May. The stenciled graphics were created in Sharpie marker. During the summer session last week, the girls drew over the lines with pencil, causing the designs to transfer onto the wall. 

They were inspired by the theme, “Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye,” and incorporated symbols of academics, art, healthy school lunch, sports, the school’s mascot and more. They weaved some “zentangling” patterns in too.

The students are looking forward to splashing color onto the mural when art club resumes again during school in the fall, since this version of the mural is basically an outline for the finished artwork. 

“We thought this was a nice way for them to show what art club’s all about and to capture each of them as individuals,” Mrs. Jennelle Schroeder said. 

Art teacher Mrs. Natalie Campbell said each of the summer session students, as well as about a dozen others from regular art club, have also traced an outline of their hands and used the zentangle method to decorate them. These handprints will be painted, and then carefully added to the mural as a way to further leave their mark on something at the school.

During the clay art sessions, Campbell said students used air-dry clay to create pinch pots, which were laid on their sides and made into an animal of each student’s choice.

The middle school art club started a couple years ago and is growing. During the school year, club members meet for an hour after school three to four days per week.
