Tuesday’s Partisan Primary election had a voter turnout of 29.3 percent in Crawford County, which is much higher than the normal 15-17 percent voter turnout for a primary, according to County Clerk Janet Geisler.

The most high-profile local race was on the Democratic ticket for the 96th Assembly seat. Paul Buhr defeated Alicia Leinberger for the position, with 1,971 votes (or 55 percent) to her 1,604 votes. Though Buhr won district-wide, Crawford County ended the night in disagreement with that stance. Leinberger took the most county votes with 770, compared to Buhr’s 761.

On the Republican ticket for 96th Assembly, Loren Oldenburg ran unopposed in the primary and received 714 votes Tuesday.

In the Gubernatorial race, State Superintendent Tony Evers beat out seven other Democrats Tuesday for the chance to challenge Gov. Scott Walker in his bid for a third term. Evers finished the night with 41.7 percent of the vote, winning on 224,544 party ballots. He also swept Crawford County with 706 votes.

The next closest Democratic candidate for the governor’s office, statewide, was Mahlon Mitchell, who obtained 16.4 percent of the vote, followed by Kelda Roys, who had 12.8 percent. In Crawford County, Kathleen Vinehout was second in line with 318 votes, then Mike McCabe had 205 and Paul Soglin 101. Mitchell tallied 83 votes locally, Matt Flynn earned 76 and Kelda Roys received 38.

As most expected, on the Republican ticket, Gov. Walker was the highest vote-getter. He ended up with 91.6 percent of the vote, while opponent Robert Meyers attained 8.4 percent. In Crawford County, Walker garnered 736 votes to Meyer’s 89.

The remaining state races were complete with the following winners:

Democrat

Lieutenant governor, Mandela Barnes; attorney general, Josh Kaul; secretary of state, Doug LaFollette; state treasurer, Sarah Godlewski (beat former state treasurer Dawn Marie Sass); U.S. senator, Tammy Baldwin; U.S. congressman, Ron Kind

Republican

Lieutenant governor, Rebecca Kleefisch; attorney general, Brad Schimel; secretary of state, Jay Schroeder; state treasurer, Travis Hartwig; U.S. senator, Leah Vukmir (defeated Kevin Nicholson); U.S. congressman, Steve Toft

The Crawford County Board of Canvassers will be meeting on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. in Room 204 of the Crawford County Administration Building to canvass the votes from the Aug. 14 Partisan Primary election.
