Over the winter, the education committee of the Prairie du Chien Historical Society will construct a new exhibit at Fort Crawford Museum to be unveiled in 2019. It will feature the cigar factories in Prairie du Chien in the mid 1800s through the early 1900s. Committee members have asked historical society members to help gather information and artifacts for this exhibit. While there are a number of wonderful artifacts to use, the committee wonders if there are more out there.

The committee is especially interested in what is known about:

•the Avia Cigar Factory

•the White Owl Cigar Warehouse

•Cigar makers: G.I. Linder, Fred Evert, Frank Cordier, Ferdinand Erdenberger, (There is already quite a bit of information on Theodore Ziel).

The committee also hopes  to acquire (by donation or by loan) old wooden cigar boxes from the above cigar makers, and any other items associated with the businesses. The committee is not seeking the more modern cardboard cigar boxes.

Any photographs of the factories or the cigar makers would also be a plus.

Community members, past and present, are asked to bring items to the Fort Crawford Museum when it is open. The season ends the last week of October. If there are questions, or items coming from afar, people can call the museum at 326-6960 (leave a message if necessary).
