Bert Joseph Elledge, 89, of Edgewood, died on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. 

Private family service with be held at a later date.

Final resting place will be at Hansel Cemetery, Garber.

Bert was born on May 13, 1929, near Elkport, the son of Bert Andrew and Jessie Mae (Harbaugh) Elledge. Bert attended country school near Elkport and high school in Colesburg. 

Bert married Alice G. Hankins on Sept. 10, 1949. Two children, David and Richard, were born to this union. 

Bert worked for F. E. Welterlen Ford in Edgewood, first as a mechanic for many years before selling Fords for Frank Welterlen. Later, he sold Fords for Holscher Ford in Earlville and also farmed. 

Bert became interested in law enforcement and served several years as a deputy sheriff for Sheriff Leonard “Mike” Barr of the Delaware County Sheriff’s office. Bert was then elected sheriff after the retirement of Sheriff Barr. 

Bert was an accomplished baseball pitcher for the Colesburg team. He loved hunting and fishing as well as following the Cubs and horse racing. 

Bert and Alice also served as foster parents to several children. 

Bert is survived by his sons, David (Connie) Elledge of Arlington and Richard (Gwen) Elledge of Colesburg; his grandchildren, Aaron Elledge, Holly (Dave) Moorman, Clint (Katie) Elledge, and Hannah Elledge; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Bert was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years; his parents; and ten siblings.
