Support your favorite school and shop for something you desire at this weekend’s We Buy Nearby - Shop for Schools event in downtown Prairie du Chien and McGregor. By making a purchase at any of 15 participating stores Oct. 19-20, a percentage of your expense will be donated to the school of your choice. Schools to pick from include Prairie du Chien public, Prairie du Chien Catholic, Wauzeka-Steuben, Seneca and River Ridge in Wisconsin or MFL Mar-Mac, Clayton Ridge and Central Elkader in Iowa.

Businesses engaging in this opportunity, and the percentages on purchases they will donate, include:

Prairie du Chien:

Something for Everyone—10 percent

Front Porch Quilts—10 percent

Wall Street—10 percent

Broken Ladder—5 percent

JC Party Store—5 percent

Panka’s Shoe Store—5 percent

The Pickett Fence—10 percent (includes sample sale)

True Value—5 percent (on purchases up to $500)

Rockweiler Appliance—5 percent (on purchases up to $500)

Sports World—10 percent (excludes shoes)

The Planted Tree—10 percent (on all metal items)

The Local Oven—10 percent (on giftware)

Radio Shack—2 percent (including cell phones)

McGregor:

Paper Moon—10 percent

By the Spoonful—10 percent (including gift cards)

All donations will be percentages on regular-priced merchandise.

“This year, we’ve gained a number of participants. We’re happy we have as many,” said Lou Davis, owner of The Pickett Fence and co-coordinator of We Buy Nearby.

PdC Main Street and the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce are the co-sponsors of this shopping event.

Fellow coordinator Greg Cerven, owner of The Local Oven, said, the more schools get out and promote this, the more funds can be raised for each school. “We’ve heard schools are going to be competitive,” he said, noting that bragging rights are on the line.

According to Davis, the goals of We Buy Nearby are to not only get customers in stores prior to the holiday shopping season, but also to support area schools with good will and by giving back. Oct. 19-20 is also Oktoberfest weekend in Prairie du Chien, so there will be plenty of activities happening to get people out and about.

The amount of money raised from this event will be announced in the weeks following the promotion.
