Nicholas Walker Smethurst, 40 years old and 44 days, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13.

He was born Aug. 31, 1978, in Prairie du Chien. Nick’s childhood was spent enjoying the outdoors at his grandparent’s farm, on the river and in the woods with family and friends. Nick graduated from Prairie du Chien High School, the class of 1997. Nick’s love of golf ran deep. He served as his high school’s golf team captain and led his team to multiple sectional and regional tournaments. Nick went on later in life to compete in the Dakota Professional Golf Tour. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Minnesota (Winona), and later moved to the Twin Cities, attending Anoka Technical College.

Nick married his best friend, Alysha (Mauriala), on May 27, 2006. He was blessed to become a father to their two amazing kids, Landon and Addison. Nick was passionate about all things outdoors, including hunting, fishing and football. Over the last several years, he enjoyed being part of the Andover football community, coaching and cheering on his son. Those who knew Nick know he had amazing dance skills. His love of dancing and fluid moves were something he shared with his sweet daughter. In 2011, Nick co-founded NCS Gunsmithing and Sales in his hometown with his brother, Chad.

Nick demonstrated unconditional love for his children, who will cherish the memories they created. He had a kindness about him that extended to everyone he met. His humor and love of life was contagious to those around him. Nick always had a positive attitude and outlook on life, even when handling some of the hardest battles one could endure.

Nick was welcomed into Heaven by his dad, Jeff; grandparents, Eldon and Jeanette Smethurst, Leroy “Bud” and Dorothea Walker; and David Dobbs. He is survived by his loving wife, Alysha (Mauriala); wonderful children, Landon and Addison; mother, Sandy; brothers, Chad (Teesha) and Troy (Wendy); nieces and nephews; cousins, Luke and Matt Dobbs; many relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family. Thank you to the God-sent staff at Mercy Hospital who provided care and support to Nick and his family during his last days. Additional thanks to Nick’s employer, Cornerstone Auto of Elk River, for the endless support during his courageous battle.

Visitation will be Thursday Oct. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Washburn-McReavy Coon Rapids Chapel, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd. NW, Coon Rapids, Minn. A funeral service will be Friday, Oct. 19, at 12 p.m. at Eagle Brook Church–Anoka Campus, 1100 US-10, Anoka, Minn., with visitation one hour prior at church.
