School board hears reports, updates; elects officers at special meeting

The Clayton Ridge School board, meeting in regular session on Oct. 16, heard reports from administrators, approved the instructional support levy and approved a request for state aid.

President John Heying led members Christine Aulwes, Mike Finnegan, Ellen Johnson and Kathy Ihde through the evening's agenda. Not present were board members Alecia Helle and Jason Reimer. Also attending were Superintendent Shane Wahls, secretary-treasurer David Schlueter and Steve Hoff. 

There were no comments made at a public hearing for the proposed instructional support levy. The board unanimously approved participation in the levy program. 

Superintendent Wahls gave updates on construction projects, the gym roof and Veteran's Day plans. It was noted that certified enrollment for this school year is up 17 students.

Steve Hoff, Iowa Virtual Academy head of schools, told the board that enrollment has increased 116 students. He discussed enrollment procedures for the coming school year, field trips and assessment programs.

David Schlueter reviewed the annual report for 2017-18.

Michelle Deegan was hired as a part-time Title I teacher. Steve Clefisch was hired as a bus route driver and shuttle bus driver. Jarid Grinstead and Rich Miller were approved as volunteer wrestling coaches, pending certification.

The board unanimously voted to request state aid for the negative special education balance of $320,717.85. 

The board denied 42 open enrollment applications due to missing deadlines and/or classroom availability.

Three requests for use of school facilities were approved for Garnavillo Day Care, the Jefferson Go-Hawks and Jeff Hoeger on behalf of youth basketball.

Special meeting

The school board, with all members present, held its annual organizational meeting on Oct. 10 to elect officers and make appointments.

John Heying was elected president; Christine Aulwes was named vice-president and David Schlueter was appointed secretary-treasurer. Schlueter's compensation for secretary was set at $500 annually. 

The board decided to hold regulalr meetings in Garnavillo from January through June and in Guttenberg from July through December on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. 

The Guttenberg Press was appointed official newspaper. Community Savings Bank, Peoples State Bank and Fidelity Bank and Trust were named official depositories. Brett Nitschke of the Lynch Dallas Law Firm was appointed legal counsel. Heying, Ihde and Finnegan were appointed to the negotiation committee with Aulwes as alternate. Mike Finnegan was appointed to the Clayton County Conference Board.

Open enrollment requests were okayed for Ashton, Landon and Emma Phillips from Clayton Ridge to MFL MarMac; of Kayden Williams and Jaxson Bolsinger from Clayton Ridge to Ed-Co, and of Elyzah Bries from West Dubuque to Clayton Ridge. 

The board approved an FFA trip to Indianapolis and a Spanish Club trip to Elgin, Ill.
